I recently read an article from Duke about how microB cells outnumber human cells in our bodies by 100 to 1. So we may not be fully human! But that post on Google+ reminded me that NSF studies show that America’s liberal arts colleges, where often 40-50% of the students major in the sciences, are the bedrock of America’s leadership in the world in science. Why? Because a disproportionate number of Phd’s in the sciences are earned by students who go to liberal arts colleges. That is because most of them do undergraduate research projects in labs with 10-15 other students. As 10,000 baby boomers retire everyday for the next 20 years, I have developed strategies to tap into the skills of retiring scientists to who can be invaluable to small colleges.
